SUMMARY:
Congregation Temple Israel is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Human Resources & Accounting Manager to serve as an expert on our team. This role oversees day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll, and human resources functions and ensures compliance with accounting principles, employment laws, and Temple policies while fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Human Resources & Payroll
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including FMLA, ADA, and EEOC regulations
- Administer semi-monthly payroll, benefits, and retirement plans, ensuring accuracy in compensation, tax deductions, and benefits
- Maintain and update employee records, contracts, and documentation securely and confidentially
- Support hiring managers with recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding
- Develop expertise in HR software and recommend utilization improvements
- Assist with open enrollment process for employee benefits
- Provide all necessary HR data to leadership to inform decision making
- Implement existing and recommend improvements to HR policies and procedures that align with Temple Israel’s values and legal requirements
Bookkeeping & Accounting
- Manage day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Principles, as implemented by Temple Israel
- Maintain all books, documents, and records relating to the financial operation of the Temple in an accurate, orderly, and efficient manner
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations
- Implement existing and recommend improvements to financial processes
- Plan for the timely approval and payment of financial obligations with sufficient internal controls
- Oversee tracking and timely collection of receivables, including donor contributions and pledges
- Prepare or assist in preparing monthly financial reports, including open-charge reports, departmental P&Ls, and other requested reports as necessary
- Manage cash flow and banking relationships, as directed
- Work closely with outsourced accounting firm
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- College level degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Human Resources, Accounting, Non-Profit Administration, or a related field
- SPHR, PHR, or SHRM credentials preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and methods in accounting/bookkeeping
- Understanding of fund accounting and Financial Accounting Board Standards preferred, relating to Temple operations
- Proficiency in QuickBooks (or similar accounting software), payroll systems, customer relationship management software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
- Ability to manage sensitive budgetary and financial situations in a confidential manner
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of constituencies
EXAMPLES OF TASKS PERFORMED
- Confer with members to discuss their dues obligations, account statements, and prior giving history
- Accurate billing for Synagogue Support (dues), fundraising campaigns, and school tuition
- Payroll processing, including all management of payroll documents
- Enter accounts payable invoices for approval and submit payments as directed
- Maintain and adhere to timeline of reporting and census needs to submit to vendors and governmental agencies
- Regularly audit and update personnel records to ensure accuracy at all times
